Psychiatrist West Los Angeles: Katherine Watkins MD

Posted on: January 25, 2016

As a West Los Angeles psychiatrist with an office conveniently located off the 10 freeway, I welcome residents of West L.A. and the surrounding area who are seeking diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of psychiatric disorders and emotional problems.

The First Step Toward Changing Your Life

I believe people can best realize their potential to grow in the context of supportive relationships. I also believe that a good relationship with a therapist can change your life. I stay abreast of the research literature to give you state-of-the-art treatment that is scientifically supported by the most current evidence. This allows me to individualize treatment depending on your needs and preferences. As a patient, you will find that I believe in shared decision-making. I will strive to make sure that you understand the choices you have in terms of treatment options and the risks and benefits of treatment. In addition, I recognize that mental illness is a disease of the brain, and that medication, when used judiciously, can be enormously helpful in relieving suffering.

Women’s Mental Health

Along with expertise in psychopharmacology (medications) and psychotherapy for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, I have specialized experience in women’s mental health. Specifically, I provide evaluation or treatment for psychological issues related to menstruation, pregnancy, infertility, and menopause, as well as treatment of psychiatric disorders through pregnancy and postpartum periods.

In your search for a therapist, you will very likely research the experience and credentials of several psychiatrists. In that regard, please see About Dr. Watkins, which contains my educational background and professional experience.

The RAND Corporation

In addition to my private practice, I am also a senior scientist at the RAND Corporation. In this role I conduct mental health policy research and write about how our country can improve the quality of mental health and substance abuse treatment. I have extensive experience researching and writing about Co-Occurring Disorders, in particular.

Selected Published works on Co-Occurring Disorders

A Network of West Los Angeles Psychiatrists

It has been my experience that it is sometimes best to collaborate with other psychotherapists or physicians to provide integrated treatment. If you are currently in treatment with a psychotherapist or primary care physician, I will have you complete an Authorization to Release Information form. That release will allow me to contact your therapist or physician. At that time I will have the option to provide him or her with feedback about our appointment and to discuss a shared treatment plan as needed. It is my policy to stay in regular communication with collaborating providers.

Expertise

My expertise includes working with patients who have mood problems, anxiety, adult attention-deficit disorder, personality disorders, adjustment difficulties with life transitions and medical illness-related mood and anxiety problems. You may find a fuller description of each of these problems here.
